Tallow greases are often used with second or third stage polishing operations to “oil out” prior to buffing. The application of lubricants to an abrasive belt or wheel produces a softer, more forgiving cutting action and results in a surface that is easier to buff out. By keeping abrasives and the work surface cool, well-designed grease helps extend abrasives' lifespan. Saponifiable grease is converted into a soap with a simple alkaline cleaner, which helps eliminate the need for specialized solvents and cleaners on brushed workpieces.
